What's up? Stars, planets, the sun, the moon; what are these things. Are they always in the same place? Constellations??? Black holes? Where did we come from? Where are we going?
And these are just some of the questions we will tackle through the course of this year.
This is a high interest course with some rigor, but my experience tells me that most students that have trouble, have trouble with the Observing Project. I will expect you to get out 5 nights in 6 weeks weather permitting (And even in Newport, it usually does). Draw what you see. You don't have to be an artist. The act of drawing helps you notice what's there. At the beginnig I will not expect you to identify what you are seeing, but as the year progresses I will expect that you might recognize some of the constellations and/or planets. But the toughest part for many students is just getting out there.
So get out there. Get to know the night sky. Someday you'll be able to share it with your kids, grandkids, great grandkids...
